Airbus is backing the “Green Wave” initiative, an ambitious education and youth outreach programme designed to raise awareness of the crucial role that bio-diversity plays in our lives and our futures, and to create international relationships, particularly among young people.
This represents a new partnership of Airbus with the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (the CBD). This “Green Wave” initiative will encourage students to plant trees and to celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity at 10am on 22nd May each year.

Airbus’ initial involvement is to help raise public awareness of the “Green Wave” initiative through a joint global communications campaign. Airbus will then work with airlines and other industry members to further develop support for the “Green Wave” campaign and the CBD.

Talking about Airbus’ commitment, Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO said: “Changing land use is a key factor in the loss of biodiversity. Aviation has a great track record in bringing people together and helping to spread development, but with minimal impact on land use.

“We are keen to put resources and expertise into supporting people who are tackling the major causes of climate change. Deforestation is responsible for 20 per cent of the greenhouse effect that causes global warming so “The Green Wave” is a great project for us to start with.”

In terms of impact, air transport uses only one per cent of all land used for transport in Europe, compared to four per cent for rail and 83 per cent for road. And just seven per cent of the population is affected by transport noise near airports, compared to 14 per cent for rail and 79 per cent for road. Airbus and the CBD have interests in common. The CBD aims to conserve bio-diversity, encourage the sustainable use of its components and promote the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of resources.

Air transport is one of the best ways to do all of those things.

Airbus intends to help the CBD achieve its goals and we hope the rest of the aviation industry will also use their global network to help.
We believe that engaging young people in preserving the diversity of life on earth today, is a sound investment in tomorrow. This could be the biggest thing we've helped get off the ground!

The CBD is there to help us help ourselves and Airbus intends to start now - by helping them. As a business we owe it to our customers and shareholders, as parents we owe it to our children, and as human beings, we owe it to each other.
