About Supply-Chain Logistics
Airbus produces a large and consistently growing number of aircraft and is currently in the process of developing a range of new products. Supply Chain Logistics (SCL) supports all of these programmes with an integrated Supply Chain that delivers the right part, to the right place at the right time.
Supply Chain Logistics manages an external supply base of hundreds of suppliers responsible for all parts and materials consumed during the wing manufacture process for all programmes in Broughton and A400M in Filton. The Physical Logistics aspect of the function is in responsible for storing and moving parts and products, both internally and externally. It is also responsible for managing our contracts with existing 3PL partners. Stock accuracy and visibility are central objectives achieved through the use of System Application Process (SAP) software.
It is the SCL team that makes sure the product is successfully shipped and delivered to the customer by transporting the finished wing to the Final Assembly lines in France, Germany and Spain, via the Beluga transport aircraft or by road and sea for A380 wings. In addition, parts despatch supports the FAL's whilst spares assist the customers in after sale. Any time an aircraft is on the ground, the department ships the required wing spare parts, kits and component repairs, either to Hamburg or directly to customer worldwide
DEG's joining the SCL function are given a position of responsibility early on, often accountable for multi million pound projects. Whilst there is room for them to develop and implement their own ideas there is always the necessary support infrastructure around them to ensure functional objectives are met.
Case Study - Nicola
The Physical Logistics department has been undergoing significant changes in the last two years to make its operations 'leaner'. Change management and modifications affecting Filton's main store have been central elements of my placement. Our team consists of six people who work to improve the effectiveness of logistics operations and to implement the concept of a "visual factory" in the operations areas. Each member of the team works on a specific area of the business and my role has been to support them with single projects.
My placement has encompassed packaging to improve the efficiency and speed of operations, bar-coding, physical marking of space (designing footprints for Filton's main store) and studying operations in order to recall over-processing and waste.
This placement has given me an increased awareness of different areas of the business and provided me with useful tools in order to successfully manage projects and change. Moreover, working closely with the Business Improvement team, I was able to use management and logistics theories learned during my academic training. |
