Airbus produces a large and consistently growing number of aircraft and is currently in the process of developing a range of new products. Supply Chain Logistics (SCL) supports all of these programmes with an integrated Supply Chain that delivers the right part, to the right place at the right time. |
| |
SCL is divided into 3 distinct areas across Airbus - Programme Planning, SCL Filton and SCL Broughton.
The SCL and program planning organisations need to ensure that the business has the capacity and ability to deliver what it needed. The Material Requirements Planning system ensures timely delivery of materials, services and parts from vendor suppliers through goods receipt, into stores and then out to the production operations.
DEGs have the opportunity to experience work at both Airbus UK sites, in manufacturing engineering and manufacturing operations. You would also gain experience working with suppliers (usually on an external placement) and SCL's customers - the final assembly lines in Toulouse or Hamburg.
SCL manages an external supply base of hundreds of, responsible for all parts and material consumed during the wing manufacture process in Broughton and Filton, for Airbus family products. The Physical Logistics department is in charge of marshalling, storing and moving parts and products, both internally and externally. Stock accuracy and visibility are central objectives achieved through the use of System Application Process (SAP) software.
It is the SCL team that makes sure the product is successfully shipped and delivered to the customer. This involves transport and dispatch responsibilities, while spares support and the services department assist the customers after sale. Any time an aircraft is on the ground, the department ships the required wing spare parts, kits and component repairs, either to Hamburg or directly to the customer.
Entry Requirements: You will need to have a relevant Bachelors or Masters degree or equivalent. Relevant degree subjects include Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Operations, Air Transport and Logistics Management, Purchase and Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Economics and Management, Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering, General Engineering, Management Sciences, Business Management and Maths and Applied Maths.
Ideal applicants should demonstrate previous experience of organising events or projects resulting in the delivery of a result.
Case Study - Nicola Lazzari
The Physical Logistics department has been undergoing significant changes in the last two years designed to make its operations 'leaner'. Change management and modifications affecting Filton's main store have been central elements of my placement. Our team consists of six people who work to improve the effectiveness of logistics operations and to implement the concept of a "visual factory" in the operations areas. Each member of the team works on a specific area of the business and my role has been to support them with single projects.
My placement has encompassed issues on packaging to improve the efficiency and speed of operations, bar-coding, physical marking of space (designing footprints for Filton's main store) and studying operations in order to recall over-processing and waste.
This placement has given me an increased awareness of different areas of the business and provided me with useful tools in order to successfully manage projects and change. Moreover, working closely with the Business Improvement team, I was able to use management and logistics theories learned during my academic training.
Case Study - Caroline Wood
The programme planning department in Broughton has approx 50 team members split across both sites. Each product area has its own team of programme planners i.e. long range, single aisle, new products etc. The central team provides support to all the planning teams and information about build rates, inventory, labour, etc, to other departments across the site. The planners embedded within the teams provide MPS scheduling and forecasting services, as well as lower level tactical planning. They report to operations every day giving the current state of the build and projecting the view forward to establish any impacts on deliveries.
My role has continually developed over the six-month placement, during which I respond to functional and operational requirements. I am running a number of projects for different managers and this gives me the opportunity to see all the different Airbus products in-build ,including the A380 and the Hawker corporate jet. |
