Entry requirements
Suitable degrees include an accredited MEng or equivalent in:
Aeronautical Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Other degrees would also be considered; alternatively, we would also consider applications from candidates with a degree in maths and/or physics with a relevant MSc or equivalent.
Additional Requirements
Ideally candidates should have a wider interest in the aerospace industry and profession (including charterships) and demonstrable experience of Aerospace-based projects during Further Education. Demonstration of application of learnt engineering skills gained at university through activities such as internships is desirable.
About Customer Services Engineering and Maintenance
Customer Services within Airbus deals with all aspects of the aircraft once delivered to the customer. This includes technical support and maintenance throughout the aircraft life, which is managed across 4 sites (Toulouse, Hamburg, Madrid and Filton) with approximately 3700 people (150 in UK).
The programme, which is based in Filton is technically based and involves different placements within the key areas of Customer Services, this includes;
- Maintenance Engineering and Programs
- Landing Gear
- Structure
- Systems
- Ground Support Engineering
- Spares Support and Services
- Technical Data
- Aircraft Maintenance Manual
- Illustrated Parts Catalogue
- Structure Repair Manual
- Service Bulletins
- Wide body Continuous Product Development
- Change Management
There are also opportunities for an external placement to establish a greater understanding of the wider business. Also, where there is a link to placement objectives, there is an opportunity to visit to other sites in Airbus
An engineering/technical background is essential to be able to put the work into context and communicate effectively with other areas of the business. Therefore, the requirement for the Customer Services DEG programme is an Engineering degree.
Case Study - Meryl
My first 3 months in Customer Services was within the Change Management team. This is the team supporting Customer Services and involves areas such as Continuous Improvement, Lean Deployment, Quality and Business Operations. This area of the business is mainly focussed on ensuring that the Customer Services organisation runs efficiently now and in the future. Due to the nature of the projects that I was involved in, I received a great deal of exposure to both the other teams in the department, and the trans-national Change Management teams.
My second placement was more technical and involved working in Maintenance Engineering Programmes. I learnt a great deal about the aircraft structure and systems, reinforced by attending a Landing Gear Familiarisation course at Messier Dowty. This was an excellent placement as I was actively involved in managing a project, which involved engineering design, landing gear suppliers and several airline customers.
I also had a fantastic opportunity of working in Hamburg at Airbus Germany for 3 months. During this placement I worked on a project for the A350XWB Cabin, which involved direct customer contact. I found this an incredibly satisfying placement and was given a large amount of responsibility and accountability.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the variety of the work during my first year in Customer Services. It has been a mixture of technical and 'people focussed' work which has enabled my to utilise my engineering degree as well as improving my overall business knowledge. |
