The A310 has been designed for optimum operating efficiency in regional operations, combined with the capability to fly extended range routes. It does not carry the cost increments of design for long range operations for which aircraft such as the A340 Family are better optimised.

The A310’s optimized design range of up to 5,200 nautical miles (9,600 km) is one of the parameters that has made it the ideal ‘first widebody’ aircraft for airlines growing to this size of operation.
