Airbus’ 21st century flagship has “shared its love” with passenger and airlines alike in the 10 years since it performed its maiden flight in April 2005. The 21st century flagship highlights Airbus’ passion for aviation as a true game-changer for travellers, with its unrivalled space and comfort aloft, while generating significant revenue for operators. Thirteen operators now fly the double-deck A380 – with the jetliner taking off or landing somewhere in the world every four minutes, on average.

Airbus BizLab: accelerating aerospace innovation

This video puts the spotlight on Airbus' BizLab network, which was created to speed up the transformation of ground-breaking ideas into valuable business propositions, all within an extended innovation eco-system. An Airbus BizLab provides wide-ranging support for early-stage projects in the form of a six-month acceleration programme, through which entrepreneurs, start-up businesses and Airbus employee “intrapreneurs” are given access to a large number of coaches, experts and mentors across various domains. Thanks to its unmatched passenger appeal and revenue-generating capabilities, Airbus’ A380 has earned its place as the new “queen of the skies.” As of January 2015, A380 jetliners are being operated by 13 customers around the globe: Air France, Asiana Airlines, British Airways, China Southern Airlines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways International (THAI).

Sharklet retrofit: Benefit from increased fuel-efficiency

As a result of the popularity of Airbus’ fuel-saving Sharklet wingtip devices – which are an option on new-build A320ceo (current engine option) Family jetliners and standard for NEO (new engine option) versions – the company has launched a Sharklet retrofit programme for in-service CEO aircraft. Available as a pre-assembled, plug-and-play solution, this retrofit offers numerous operational advantages including fuel burn savings up to 4 per cent, increased payload and range capabilities, and reduced CO2 emissions.

Airbus’ Sharklets: Ready for retrofit

Airbus brought together customers and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organisations to finalise its Sharklet retrofit solution for in-service A320ceo (current engine option) Family jetliners using its “embodiment demonstrator” aircraft. This full-scale demonstrator allowed Airbus to optimise the installation sequence as well as perform fuel and wing-alignment certification tests. Airbus Upgrade Services makes available the full kit and service bulletin for incorporating the fuel-saving wingtip devices on in-service A320ceo Family aircraft, with the retrofit performed by customers’ chosen MRO organisations.

The increased takeoff weight A330 variant’s first flight

Continuing Airbus’ philosophy of incremental innovation, the company’s 242-metric tonne maximum takeoff weight A330 variant took to the skies for the first time in January 2015. The aircraft performed a successful maiden flight, which lasted approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes from takeoff to landing – both of which occurred at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport in southwestern France. As the newest enhancement to the popular and reliable A330 Family, the 242-tonne maximum takeoff weight A330 variant offers up to 500 nautical miles more range and up to 2 per cent reduced fuel consumption.
