Airbus’ next-generation A350 XWB completed its four-trip route-proving campaign – which is designed to demonstrate the aircraft’s readiness for airline operations and is part of the final stage toward certification. On its fourth trip, this highly-efficient jetliner made stops in Doha, Qatar, Perth, Australia, Moscow, Russia and Helsinki, Finland to wrap up a campaign that amassed some 81,700 naut. mi. in approximately 180 flight hours. The A350 XWB performed as expected and on schedule at each destination, and is expected to achieve Type Certification in the third quarter of 2014.

Airbus’ MSN005 developmental A350 XWB jetliner continues on the third trip of its global route-proving tour to demonstrate the aircraft’s readiness for airline operations. In this phase, the aircraft received warm welcomes in Johannesburg, South Africa; Sydney, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Santiago, Chile then flew to Sao Paulo, Brazil before returning to Toulouse, France.

A350 XWB route proving: Hong Kong and Singapore

Airbus’ MSN005 developmental A350 XWB jetliner travelled to Asia on the second trip of its global route-proving tour to demonstrate the aircraft’s readiness for airline operations. In this phase, the jetliner flew from Toulouse, France to Hong Kong, and then operated multiple flights between Hong Kong and Singapore before returning to Toulouse. The Asian trip allowed Airbus to evaluate the A350 XWB’s performance in hot and humid conditions, as well as showcase the aircraft for Cathay Pacific Airways – which has 46 of these highly efficient jetliners on order.

A sweet solution: Bee honey helps Airbus think green

Airbus has enlisted bees to “monitor” its environmental performance with hives in two locations near the company’s Hamburg, Germany facilities. Airbus collects the bees' honey, which can provide key data on the quality of surrounding soil, air and water. In addition to sending the honey off for pollution-level analysis at an independent lab, the company also produces more than 600 jars per year – which are given away to customers, suppliers and staff.

A350 XWB route proving: Europe-Canada via the North Pole and back

The first phase of A350 XWB route-proving flights took Airbus’ newest jetliner from Toulouse, France over the North Pole to Iqaluit Airport in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. On its return flight, the A350-900 made a stopover in Frankfurt, Germany for visits by personnel from Lufthansa – one of the 38 customers placing firm orders for the A350 Family to date. The world route proving flights are demonstrating the A350-900 version’s readiness for airline operations, and will include operations to14 major airports worldwide.

Airbus’ A330neo builds on this widebody family’s success

Continuing its commitment to continuous product upgrades, Airbus launched the enhanced A330neo (new engine option) at the 2014 Farnborough Airshow. Scheduled for a fourth quarter 2017 service entry, the A330neo will be equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and shares 95 per cent commonality with existing A330 aircraft. Other upgrades include improved aerodynamic performance and the latest cabin developments – including Airbus’ modern comfort standard for economy class: at least 18-inch wide seats.
